Dental Implants An Overview
Dental implants have become the gold standard of tooth replacement for patients, providing long-term stability and supporting the function of the bite. Dental implants and implant supported dentures and bridges restore natural chewing function, comfort and the confidence to eat and speak without fear of losing one’s teeth.
Reston, VA general dentist Dr. Datta Malyavantham is a member of both the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI). He has years of experience and advanced training in the placement of all types of dental implants.
What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants mimic the natural structure and ingenuity of a human tooth. Made of three main components the dental implant follows the form and function of teeth providing the patient with a nearly full functioning bite. It replaces not only the crown, or visible part of the tooth above the gum line but also the tooth root below the gum line. The implanted post helps to stabilize bone tissue in the jaw. The dental implant post is designed to integrate with the jaw bone through the natural process of osseointegration. As the implant fuses to the jaw, it creates a stable hold that decreases the risk of future bone deterioration characteristic in patients with missing teeth. Over time, the changes in bone density lead to changes in the structure and appearance of the lower jaw, often lending a more aged appearance.
Dental Crown: Dental implants can be used to secure a dental crown for a single missing tooth. Multiple implants can be placed to secure a dental bridge or denture. The dental restoration will be custom designed for a patient’s unique specifications with the goal of looking like a natural tooth.
Abutment: The small metal abutment is attached to the dental implant once the implant has fully healed. The abutment protrudes from the gum line and provides as an anchor for the dental restoration. The dental crown will lock into the abutment for a stable restoration.
Dental Implant Post: Made from biocompatible titanium, Dr. Datta surgically implants the post into the jaw bone. For single dental implants, the post replaces the missing tooth root and tooth. In other dental implant procedures such as All-On-Four, several dental implants are strategically placed in the jaw to optimize healthy bone tissue and minimize overall bone loss and changes in the jaw structure.
