Emergency Dentistry FAQs

What do I do if I have a bad toothache?

Toothaches that persist are commonly an indication of tooth decay. An over the counter pain medication such as ibuprofen may help to ease the pain. DO NOT apply anything directly to the affected tooth surface. In rare cases a toothache may be a symptom of an abscess and should be treated immediately. If you are experiencing tooth pain, contact our Reston, VA area office as soon as possible.

What should I do if an object is stuck in my teeth?

If an object becomes lodged between your teeth try to gently remove it using dental floss. NEVER use a sharp object or anything other than dental floss. If you are unable to remove the object with dental floss, contact our office for advice on how to proceed.

What should I do if my child's tooth is loose?

If a primary tooth becomes very loose, gently remove the tooth from the root. Removing the tooth can prevent the tooth from becoming a chocking hazard. If a permanent or adult tooth is knocked loose or falls out due to an injury, contact our Reston, VA area dentist office immediately.

What should I do if a tooth is knocked out?

In the event a tooth is accidentally knocked out of the mouth, contact our dentist office right away. If possible, locate the tooth and pick it up by the crown of the tooth only. Rinse the tooth with warm water, do not scrub, and place in a container of milk. Bring the tooth with you to your appointment.
